Tropical Storm Noel

We have been receiving emails from friends who are concerned because of news reports about the tropical storm affecting our island. Thanks for your concern.

We are fine, although soggy and very ready to see sunshine again. Our location in the mountains is in our favor because of both the distance from the coast and also the altitude. So while we feel the effects of the tropical storm and have had almost constant rain since Thurs. night, we are safe as well as our staff. Others are not so fortunate; some homes near the rivers have been evacuated and school buildings have become shelters for the evacuees.

The secretary of education for the D.R. cancelled school throughout the entire country because of flooding, mudslides, and the hazard of transporting kids in these conditions. Nation wide 56 deaths have been reported and 27 more people are missing. Twenty-one bridges and roads have collapsed and 13,921 homes have been destroyed. Crops have been lost, so the agriculture industry and families who live on what they raise are hurting. Rice, bananas, plantains, onions, yuca and sweet potatoes have been hit fairly hard. This will mean another hike in food prices.
