Innovative Waste Water Filter

Eighteen months ago when we began developing the new Students International ministry base, Myron Mullet, Nate's brother-in-law, helped us plan the initial layout of the buildings. In March of this year, he returned and helped develop a system for handling the waste water that the base would generate. Then during the last week of July, he along with Bob, Mark, and Don, several of his contractor friends from Colorado, came to finish and test the system.

In Jarabacoa, waste water is typically emptied into a hole up to 40 ft. deep. As the water drains, it contaminates the ground water. That is why you can't drink the tap water without getting sick.

Myron suggested that we look at other waste water management options. He designed a filter system that would remove the harmful bacteria from the water which could then be safely run into the river.

The key component of the system is a 40 ft. by 9 ft. concrete box. As the waste water enters the box, the solids remain in the first three compartments. The water then flows on into the next section and as it filters down through layers of sand and charcoal, the impurities are removed. When the water exits the box, it is clean enough to drain into the river.
A local engineer is very intrigued by the system. If he sees that it works, he will be interested in using this idea for his building projects.
Thanks Myron, Bob, Don, and Mark for sharing your expertise!

Nate, that is such a coincidence! Our pastors from Mexico are visiting this weekend and we're promoting the work project for the very same kind of septic tank that we're constructing in Mexico... they explained it today to a group of people and everyone was blown away. We're gonna start the construction of it on Tuesday! Soc
