On Wednesday, we first heard that there is a hurricane moving toward the Caribbean - the first hurricane of the season. At that point, it appeared that it would be passing to the south of the Dominican Republic. However, hurricane warnings were issued for the southern part of the island. Jarabacoa is located several hours north of the south coast, so we weren't expecting high winds in our part of the country.
This morning clouds moved in, and we had an occasional shower. By three o'clock this afternoon, heavy rains had settled in. Since the D.R. is more vulnerable to the effects of rain than wind, we expect that there will be flooding at lower elevations.
Late this afternoon, we learned that at 2:00 p.m. all the airports in the D.R. were closed due to the hurricane. Ron and Carol Lanier and their family returned to the States today after serving with S.I. for a year. Their flight left Santiago at 1:30 p.m. just ahead of the airport closings.
