Independance Day is celebrated on February 27 in the Dominican Republic. On that day, the president gives a state-of-the-nation address, many citizens hang the national flag in front of their house, and the military puts on a grand parade in Santo Domingo, the capital.
The students at our two Students International preschools learned about their country's history and patriotism in the days leading up to Independance Day. On February 27, they concluded their studies with a joint activity. The children enjoyed having the Dominican flag painted on their faces.
Later in the day, they formed a parade and marched through their community waving their flags and shouting, "Vivimos en la Republica Dominicana" (We live in the Dominican Republic) and "Somos Dominicanos" (We are Dominicans). During their march they stopped several times and sang the national anthem.
