Artist Wins Artist

When artist, Francisco Castillo, came on staff with Students International Dominican Republic nearly twelve years ago, Christians in the community warned him to stay away from the local artists. “They’re involved in the occult”, they said.  But instead of separating himself from the artists, he purposed to win them for Christ. He joined the association of artists and actively looked for ways to share his faith.  Three years ago, Francisco began to spend time with Valentin, a nationally know artist.  They often had serious discussions about philosophy.  Valentin had been exposed to the church when he was young, but felt that they separated
themselves from society and didn’t have answers for his questions.  As Francisco consistently continued to minister to him, the Holy Spirit began to draw Valentin to Jesus, and twelve months ago he came to faith in Christ.  Valentin’s life changed dramatically– a 180 degree change as Francisco puts it.  He married the lady he was living with, and she as well received Christ and was baptized.  Valentin put down roots in the church, Amor a Quisqueya, where he is being discipled by the pastor.  He takes the Word of God seriously and teaches others what he has learned.  Other artists are telling Valentin, “We need what you have!”
Francisco and Valentin began leading a bible study in, Cotui, the town where Valentin was born and raised. Many of his brothers and sisters still live there.  Currently fifteen people attend the bible study of which ten have placed their faith in Christ.  Francisco says, “To reach someone for Christ, you have to be willing to invest time and resources.”
