The Most Powerful Witch?

In August, when we were repairing our house and getting ready for our move, we hired Wilian, a local painter to help us. Occasionally we would work together, and as we worked we talked. As I got to know Wilian better, I came to realize that although he was religious, his knowledge of biblical truth was limited. He talked of praying and trusting God for situations in his life, but at the same time seemed to have no problem chasing women and sleeping around. So I decided to purchase him a Bible as a gift to give him at the completion of the project. When I gave it to him, I encouraged him to read it saying, "Sometimes we think we know what the Bible says, but when we read it, we become sure of what it says."

I met Wilian again several weeks later and he told me, "Nate, I'm reading the Bible every chance I get!" Wow, I thought, that's great! He then said, "Since I'm reading it, I'm really being blessed with jobs. The bible is the most powerful witch." Then I realized that Wilian was using the Bible as a charm. He believed that if he read the Bible, it would give him good luck. I explained to him that there is no power in just reading the Bible. It's when we read and obey, that we are blessed.

The culture in the Dominican Republic in very mystic. Charms are put on baby's wrists to protect them from the "evil eye." Sorcerers are sought to protect children from witches who "suck the life out of the children". Here are photos of a shrine to the Virgin of High Grace. The sign there says, "She can do anything." There candles are burned and petitions are made. Witchcraft is often mixed with religion.

Pray for Wilian. Pray that the Holy Spirit would reveal the truth to him as he reads the Word. Pray for the Dominican Republic. Pray for a move of God that sets the people free.
