When we embraced the call to foreign missions, we were cautioned about the lack of opportunities our children would have for educational and social development. We also knew that following the call of God would sometimes mean sacrifice, not only for Maggie and I, but for our children. However, our experience has been that even though our children had to leave the familiar and adjust to a new culture, to being away from their friends, and to seeing their grandparents once every two years, the opportunities for growth and learning have been amazing.

This semester, Chastity who is a senior in high school, has been tutoring two other missionary children. Three afternoons per week she teaches them history, reading, and grammar. She loves teaching! After high school, Chastity plans to return to the States to study elementary education.
Lindsi and Andrea had similar opportunities. Lindsi was able to work at our medical clinic before leaving for college to study nursing. Andrea learned so much from Francisco, the artist at our art ministry, before beginning her studies in graphic art at the university.
Our children learned a new language, had their world view expanded, learned to function in a culture other than their own, and experienced hands-on ministry to the poor. Have our children had to give up things? Yes, but God has multiplied their sacrifice back to them in rich opportunities for growth and learning .
