Community Connections

We love every opportunity God gives us to connect with people in the community - to work with them, to talk with them, to eat with them, to experience their reality.Nate was doing a project at one of the Students International preschools. Several of the boys from the community came by, and he hired them to help with the project. They worked hard especially when Nate praised them for working like men. They were so pleased to have the opportunity to earn some pesos.
Coco is a lady that lives next door to the preschool. One day Nate was waiting for a truck load of rock material to use to fill in a mud hole in the narrow street in front of the school. The delivery was late, and Nate was going to have to miss lunch. He told Coco about what had happened and asked if she could cook lunch for him. She was happy to add to the lunch she was cooking for her family. At noon, she brought him a large plate piled with chunks of boiled squash accompanied with a small side of scrambled eggs fried with onions and peppers. She apologized for not having the normal rice, beans, and a little meat. "Times are hard", she said. But when Nate wanted to pay her for the meal, she seemed almost offended and wouldn't allow him to. It was another great opportunity to walk in the shoes of the people in the communty by gratefully eating the food that Coco and her family had for lunch.
